Black Chain Wire Fencing Newcastle

Sleek, low-glare PVC-coated chain wire fencing, installed across Newcastle and the Hunter Region, NSW.

A smarter finish on a proven fence

Black chain wire is the mesh everyone knows with a PVC coating bonded over the galvanised wire. It behaves like standard chainwire, strong and see-through, but the dark finish cuts glare and tends to recede into a garden or a treeline rather than dominating the boundary.

The coating earns its keep near the coast. Salt-laden air is hard on bare metal, and the PVC layer sits over the galvanising as a second barrier against corrosion. That usually means less attention over the years: a look at the tension and the gate hardware, and clearing anything growing through the mesh.

Applications

Where it suits

Black chain wire suits boundaries that have to work hard and still look right.

  • Homes and backyards, where the boundary contains pets and children without closing the garden in.
  • Pool surrounds, where an open barrier keeps the water in view.
  • Schools and sporting fields, where seeing through the fence is part of the safety case.
  • Commercial frontages, where the fence is the first thing a visitor reads.
  • Yards and compounds wanting a tidier perimeter than plain galvanised mesh gives.
Before You Start

What to consider

A handful of choices decide how the finished fence looks, lasts and does its job.

Height

Most home boundaries sit between 1.2 and 1.8 metres. Lower keeps a frontage open and usually suits containment; taller gives more security down the sides and rear. Councils commonly set controls on front fence height and they differ by area, so check what applies to your property. Where a pool is involved, the barrier and its gates have to satisfy the NSW pool barrier requirements.

Mesh coated wire

The mesh is the fence. A smaller aperture and a heavier gauge make it harder to climb or cut; a more open mesh is lighter and fine for a simple boundary. The PVC is bonded over galvanised wire, so the coating does two jobs, appearance and corrosion protection. Aperture and gauge work as a pair, so choose them together.

Posts and footings

A fence is only as straight as the posts holding it. Galvanised posts sized for the height, set in concrete footings at sensible spacing, keep the line tight for the life of the mesh. Sandy soil, reactive clay and sloping blocks each ask for different footing depths, and corner and gate posts carry the most load.

Gates and access

Work out how you will move through the fence before the line is set out. A pedestrian gate on the path plus a wider gate for a trailer, mower or vehicle covers most properties. Gates in a pool barrier have their own requirements for opening direction and self latching.

Common Questions

Black Chain Wire Fencing, answered

Is black chain wire stronger than galvanised chainwire?

The core wire is the same. The PVC coating is there for appearance and for extra corrosion protection rather than raw strength. Strength comes from the wire gauge, the mesh aperture and the posts, and those choices are open to you in either finish.

Does the black coating fade?

PVC-coated mesh holds its colour well in the sun, and a dark finish hides dust and marks better than a bright one. Like any exterior finish it weathers eventually, which is why the coating goes over galvanised wire rather than bare steel.

Can black chain wire be used around a pool?

An open-mesh barrier can form part of a pool enclosure, but the barrier and gates must satisfy the NSW pool barrier requirements for height, ground clearance, gaps and gate operation. What applies depends on the pool and the property, so mention it when you enquire.

How much maintenance does it need?

Very little. Look over the tension and the gate hardware from time to time, clear vegetation growing through the mesh, and rinse off salt or dust build-up near the coast or a working yard.
